'Eurasion Griffon Vulture' Conservation-Island of Cres-Croatia.

This non-governmental/non-profit organisation was formed in the 1990s by Dr Goran Susic PhD. Its purpose...to protect both the natural and cultural heritage of the island and its unique species, and to promote sustainable relationships between visitors and nature. 

An important part  the 'Eko-centar's day-to-day work is study of, protection of a unique colony of Eurasion Griffon Vultures that nest here on Cres. These birds have seen a marked decline in numbers over the past few decades. This has occurred for a variety of reasons, not least though is the relationship between the decline of the birds with the simultaneous emigration of the indigenous human population along with its traditional agricultural and animal husbandry practices.

The international volunteer effort is one of the cornerstones of this organisation, which would struggle to function without the fantastic amount of help provided by ecologically-minded, generous helpers from all over the world.

Eko-centar Caput Insulae Beli' is a small community of upto 20-30 volunteers with a handful of full-time staff. The ethos is teamwork, education and fun and volunteers should be open-minded, adaptable and reasonably fit. There are no specialist skills required to apply for a place on the programme, however if you possess a particular skill you feel may be of use to ECCIB, or if you wish to make some kind of specialist study, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate your request.

ECCIB welcomes both groups and individuals.

Whilst volunteering, you will usually be given a tour of the island and the 'Vulture-restaurants', you could find yourself conducting many different tasks such as repairing damaged dry-stone walls, helping injured Griffon Vultures, herding sheep, picking olives, clearing the vital local ponds or guiding visitors around the exhibitions.  ECCIB also provides a base for the various individuals or groups from institutions Europe-wide who come to conduct various biological and geological studies of these unique islands. The varied make-up of the Eko-centar community therefore stimulates a truly international exchange of ideologies and practices, not to mention some great food recipies! You are required to work a few hours each day, in exchange, accommodation is provided and there is a small daily charge for food. Facilities are sound with male and female dormitary style rooms and good washing facilities.  The cost of your placement is dependant on duration of stay and on top of this there is only a nominal fee to cover food etc. Having worked there as a volunteer for over 6 months, I have an excellent knowledge of the organisation, and can provide you with specific information and generic contacts if you e-mail me your questions, or if you wish to book a placement. The centre also cares for sick and injured vultures and there are currently some birds in the sanctuary which are permanent residents due to the nature of their arrival here. ECCIB also plays an important and diverse role in the daily life of Beli, and the people and nature of this group of islands.   Through its educational tours and international volunteer programme ECCIB has become a valuable resource in protecting, studying, cataloging and preserving the unique local biodiversity, of which more new species are being discovered every year. Since its birth, ECCIB has already set-up 2 areas on the island of Cres which are strictly protected by law for their natural beauty ,species content, and scientific interest.  If you dont have the time spare to volunteer, you can support ECCIB simply by purchasing a book or souvenir during your tour of the Eko-centar. Many of the items for sale are kindly produced by the volunteers. You could also take part in the 'Griffon Sponsorship Programme' From my personal experiences whilst volunteering, I highly recommend the experience. All you need is an open mind and be willing to pitch in! Digs and food are cheap, tasks are varying-dependent on time of your visit and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people and see the local area. You can stay a minimum 7 days at the centar and there are no particular skills required-just a flexible attitude and willingness to help. Apply early though as places are sought after all year round!
